Caviarist.com – The Aftermath (3 month blogging)
November 27, 2008
By the end of August ‘08 I started with this blog. It was clear from the beginning that this will be a shot into the dark. Sure, there are far bigger and more threatening issues in the world than the survival of sturgeons alone or the pollution of the Caspian Sea or the question if one is buying illegal caviar from his traditional contact or not. It started as an experiment. So, it’s about time to make a short overview of how things are happening in here and to share this with you. Now, lets see where it took me so far:
Pretty far, it seems! Surfers from over 50 countries and 30 different languages have stumbled over my blog. The following countries are the top 10 runners:
- Switzerland (of course; but right behind is….)
- United States (always and everywhere in the top ten!)
- Bulgaria (what a surprise)
- Argentina (I guess more because of ‘polo’ than ‘caviar’)
- Uruguay (my second home country)
- UK (the Brits are known to be connoisseurs. After all they invented port wine…)
- Germany (the competition?)
- Slovakia (rising states follow trends)
- France (of course!)
- Brasil (and who thought of that?)
But there are also some few but nevertheless surprising visits from the following states:
- India (6 visits)
- Costa Rica (6)
- Japan (5)
- Australia (4)
- Kazakhstan (3) (maybe I should stop posting about the caviar mafia?)
- Iran (3)
- United Arab Emirates (1)
- El Salvador (1)
- Bahrain (1)
- Azerbaijan (1)
Other key observations:
- Tuesdays and Wednesdays seem to generate most of the visits.
- Almost half of the visits are unique visitors (first timers). So, quite a high rate through returners!
- An average visitor sees almost 3 pages
- And the average time of a visitor is 4.30min.
- The Alexa Rank: aprox. 6,3Mio (still a long way to go!!!)
It is apropriate to say that Caviarist.com is already today, after 3 month blogging, a frequently visited blog about caviar. Thinking about the relatively special topic of the blog and the very small amount of people who can or want to actually enjoy caviar, these figures are quite impressive to me. The traffic points towards growth. Reason enough for me to keep going on. Pls, feel free to share your thoughts with me about how to improve things in here. After all it’s for you!
It remains to express my gratitude to all of you out there!
Overandout.
King of Sports: Rules of the game (part II)

Just found another overview of the rules. My guess is, that studying both posts (check yesterdays post) will be helpfull to make this happening a complete success.
King of Sports: Rules of the game (part I)
November 26, 2008
While the finals of the World Cup are currently held in Palermo, Buenos Aires, the Polo season in Europe is dead by now. It is amazing to observe the Kings of Polo (the top players with handicaps of 9 and 10) competing against each other. I heared that around 80% of the cream of the crop are Argentinians. This is one other thing – besides an instable economy – in which they are good in. Well, the latter is actually touring the world right now…
Anyhow, for those who need a little brush up for the upcoming Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow in St. Moritz (29.01.09 – 01.02.09), here are the main rules of the game!
(I took the illustrations from the actual St. Moritz Polo Magazine (page 92 & 93). Hope not to offend anybody with this)

Sushi & Caviar Heaven!
November 25, 2008
Last week I had a VIP visit here in Uruguay. The country where I currently reside. It was my dad who wanted to get a better insight into sturgeon breeding and caviar production.
So, after visiting the aquarfarm in the heart of Uruguay, caviarmaster Roman Alcalde himself invited us to a truly special treat! Mission objective: ‘Café Misterio’. The best sushi temple in town and with a great ambient, cool sound and lots of sushi.
Sushis are quite common these days. So we needed a little ’sugar on the top’. That’s why Roman took some fully loaded caviar tins with him and handed it out to the chef, along with some instructions to make the sushis unforgettable.
What came out of that kitchen was a revelation to me! I consider myself as a purist when it comes to caviar. But I have to admit that I was very fond, if not astonished, regarding the caviar-sushi experience. Actually it works very well. But only with lots of ’sugar on the top’!
The four of us (Fernanda Alcalde, the caviarmasters wife came with us) were getting lost in sushi heaven – eating away about 60 sushis and 400grms. of the finest Oscietra caviar there is.
Thank you Roman. It was a memorable event!
Following some pix to share with you. But beware the side effects…!
25 Years Jubilee – the St. Moritz Design Gallery
November 22, 2008
The Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow is not only a highly prestigious event but also a jubilee. In 2009 it celebrates its 25 years anniversary with a bang.
Besides the presence of Mongolia as guest country (as mentioned previously), the committee will exhibit pictures of this events legendary past. The flashback of the last 25 years can be visited at the St. Moritz Design Gallery between sometime after the 5th of December until somewhere in May 2009.
The 5 year ban and a glimpse at the future of Caspian caviar
November 15, 2008
It is generally known that during the months of April until June 2008 the Caspian Sea states reacted on the growing pressure of international watchdogs and authorities to ban fishing of wild sturgeons in the region. Now, after the latest CITES ban (thanks to Caviar Emptor!) in 2006 all states but Iran agreed verbally to implement a 5 year ban starting in 2009. (I really hope that this verbal agreement was done with spit and a hand shake – at least)
This leads to the conclusion that within the next years it will be tricky to find premium quality of wild caviar coming from the Caspian Sea. Exported Caspian caviar should therefor vanish some months after the latest possible catch season – this very autumn. Meaning that after April 2009 (after the usually 6 month shelf life expired) should be no legally traded caviar around which originates from Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan or Turkmenistan. Only Iranian caviar should be visible on the connoisseurs radar. It is already a fact that prices for illegal wild caviar will go sky high! Once again.
But as the Caspian Sea states are known not only for their amazing natural ressources and landscapes it is very possible that some misguided ‘authorities’ will try to benefit from this ‘rocket science’ and sell some false labeled caviar through the usual dark channels of the underworld. The profits would be just too yummy.
So, there’s the choice we have: For the optimists on one hand it can be considered as a “real step into the right direction”, as Julia Roberson of the sturgeon advocacy group Caviar Emptor puts it. For the pesimists on the other hand this step could lead right into the pockets of greedy hipocriticals. As a swiss it is not up to me to judge but to stay neutral – and to observe. Maybe just this much: I hope for the first and fear the latter.
But even if this ban comes with the right motivation and goal (= to prevent the fish from extinction) it does not do real good. The time span is just to short. Sturgeons need about 12-15 years until they spawn. In addition the females only lay their eggs every 2-4 years. And this means that in 2014 – when the ban will be lifted – there will be achieved virtually nothing. That is why some scientists suggest a much longer ban. It would take a ban lasting for four decades to be effective.
Why waiting, if the true alternative is already here?

Snake and sturgeons
November 14, 2008
The other day I was on the way to the floating ponds in the middle of the river (Rio Negro), where some of our partner’s sturgeons spend one great part of their lifecycle. My objective was to shoot some videos. By coincidence suddenly a water snake appeared while I was shooting.
As us, the snake was heading for the ponds too! But fortunately this specie is not dangerous and definitely to small to strangle any of our precious sturgeons. It shows once again of how natural this reserve really is!
Unfortunately the video is too heavy to be shown here. Maybe I can compress it a little and try again. For now I can only show you a print screen of this beauty. Sorry. Hope to show more soon!
