Snail caviar
March 17, 2009
And who’s to blame? The french, of course!
While the classic wild caviar due to poaching, overfishing and pollution of the Caspian Sea, is getting harder to find each day, alternatives show up. Of course, farmed caviar (from sturgeon roe) being the best ‘substitute’ for the wild thing (and in some farms even surpassing the quality of wild!). Besides farmed caviar there is today a wide offer of other fish eggs that try to get into the luxury dimension. Tobiko, Tarama, Bottarga, Bowin, Lobsviar (roe from Lobster), etc. seem to get their share – altough not on the top of the quality and price pyramid.
Now, the one that really gets tickling my curiousity are the roe from snails – or better ’escargots’ (Hélix Aspera Maxima).
The french company De Jaegers after a period of extensive research has a stock of about 60’000 snails (= 200kg. for the worldmarket). These slippery little bastards (for the ones who saw Pretty Woman) seem to produce some very tasty, pink-white looking eggs. Ok, the truth to be told, I doubt that the above image shows the roe and not some shiny tinny plastic balls…
The snails lay about 100 eggs once a year, which gives aprox. 4gramms of snail caviar. So, about 260 snails are needed to get to 1kg. (!!!).
De Jaeger promises a ‘sensation of a walk in the forest after the rain, mushrooms and oak leaf flavours, the scent of humid moss peat’. And the price range reflects this effort and promise. A 250grm. tin goes over the counter for about 1’000USD. Well, that’s the deal if you want to stay in your cozy home but walk in the forest at the same time.

Caviarteria: kitsch or kingly?
March 16, 2009
Check out this new caviarteria, which comes in a (kind of) sturgeon form and with its ridge open for the caviar. This presentoir is made of sterling silver and its interior has a 24k guilded interior. Supposedly it is handycrafted from italian silversmiths and it takes about 6 months to create one. So, orders with anticipation might be advisable…

Caviar leather – is not what it sounds like
March 14, 2009
Lately ‘caviar leather’ pops out the net more and more. Mainly responsible for that seems to be Chanel with its uncountable handbag collections. But just to make sure: the caviar leather does not derive from sturgeons and neither from its ‘cousin’, the paddlefish. It is the dried skin of a stingray. Probably coming from a thai stingray farm (yes, they do that).
Price range mostly somewhere between 300-450USD with some articles reaching the 2’000USD barrier.

The Caviarist at the Zurich Silvesterlauf 2008 (8km run)
January 13, 2009
No, it was not the caviar which made me participate in the race. And it wasnt mum’s cookies either. The Zürcher Silvesterlauf is an anual event which offers some great moments for the runners. Why? Because running with thousands of others in the heart of Zurich’s old district and admiring the typical holiday decorations and cutting through a freezing wind promises always some everlasting memories. So much is sure: if I am nearby, I will always attend this.
By the way: in this picture above, taken during the event me and my dear friend Mathias are wearing a vest of the La Martina ZwyerCaviar Limited Edition Collection. Purchasable online!
Caviar meets Hip Hop?
January 7, 2009
Indeed, it’s a long shot. But hey, it’s the 3rd millennium. Everything goes! Hip hop clothes with the wording ‘Caviar’ embroidered, which – sometimes – looks more like a stolen ‘Cartier’ font!

I have to admit that this is not my gusto at all. But there might always be an insecure coming-of-age youngster who would k*** for one of these clothes…
Or in the words of Hypebeast.com:
“Inspired by the notions of luxury through illicit means, the Caviar Cartel from SSUR aims to capture the essence of this concept through their ongoing collections. The reference to caviar itself works its way into the aesthetics of some of the pieces seen here with 3D caviar-esque beaded prints paying homage to the world of luxury that surrounds caviar culture. “
Soon we will spot P. Diddy drinking Cristal Champagne (still?) AND shoveling some imperial caviar into his mouth.

The Golden Opulence
September 27, 2008
The Golden Opulence: Check out world’s most expensive chocolate – with caviar on top.
Actually it is not caviar, but either Keta red caviar (= roe from the Keta salmon), Tarama (= roe from carp or cod fish) or even Tobiko (= roe from flyfish, popular in sushi rolls).
Anyway, if you wanna spend a thousand bucks in sweets, go this way or better: get a flight to N.Y.C.
